Vaida Vanagaite – Partner at Bain & Company

Tell us about your career journey?

I studied Science at the University of Edinburgh and spent a year interning in Procter & Gamble’s R&D department in Frankfurt – where I quickly realised that science might not be my true calling. Then (completely by accident!) I landed a job at Bain in London, and very quickly found my professional home in our Private Equity group, where I’ve now been for nine years – and counting.

What were some defining moments that shaped your career?

Most of the defining moments in my career came wrapped in tough feedback I didn’t really want to hear at the time. But looking back, I’m incredibly grateful to the people who challenged me to see things differently – often with a dose of “don’t be a victim, do something about it!” energy. Those moments taught me more than any smooth stretch ever could.

What inspired you to pursue this career path?

Honestly? Curiosity. A friend convinced me to apply for consulting, promising I’d enjoy it – and they were right! I had absolutely no idea what consultants actually did before I started, but I was hooked from day one.

What is your proudest moment in your career?

After a particularly tough project, one of my team members told me they’d love to work with me again — even if the next case was a “travel case to a trash heap.” That meant the world. Creating great team environments and mentoring others has always been the most rewarding part of my job.

What advice do you have for female students?

Build your crew – people who have your back, cheer you on, and also push you when you need it. We all need that mix of supporters and challengers to help us be bolder and aim higher.

What are some challenges you’ve had to face in your career?

Every day brings a new challenge – and honestly, it wouldn’t be nearly as fun otherwise! The toughest ones have usually been personal: setting boundaries, managing self-doubt, and not letting hard moments chip away at my confidence. If I’ve learned one big lesson, it’s this – never suffer in silence.

How are women represented in your field?

I focus on Industrials within Private Equity, so it’s still not uncommon for me to be the only woman in the room. That said, the strides towards diversity – both within Bain and on the client side — have been huge. I’m genuinely excited to see even more flair in those meeting rooms soon.

What skills do you think are most important to succeed in this career?

Quick thinking, empathy, and knowing when not to take things too seriously. A sense of humour goes a long way – sometimes it’s the only thing that keeps you sane!
